Steel weight calculator

Work out the input weight of a ring, a block or a stepped shaft before you order the bar. Figures update as you type. All dimensions in millimetres; results in kilograms, based on a steel density of 7.85 g/cm³.

Rings & pipes

For a solid round, leave the inner diameter at 0
Forging burn-off & scale
Weight = (OD² − ID²) × Length × 0.0000062 × (1 + loss ⁄ 100)

Square & rectangular blocks

Flats, squares and blanks
Forging burn-off & scale
Weight = Width × Length × Height × 0.00000785 × (1 + loss ⁄ 100)

Stepped shafts

Up to four diameters — leave unused steps blank
Forging burn-off & scale
Weight = Σ (ODₙ² × Lengthₙ) × 0.0000062 × (1 + loss ⁄ 100)
Formulae and assumptions

Basis. Mass = volume × density. Steel density is taken as 7.85 g/cm³, i.e. 0.00000785 kg/mm³. For round sections the constant 0.0000062 already includes the π⁄4 factor, so diameters can be entered directly without converting to area.

Rings and pipes. (OD² − ID²) × Length × 0.0000062. Enter 0 as the inner diameter for a solid round. An inner diameter larger than the outer diameter is rejected rather than returning a negative weight.

Blocks. Width × Length × Height × 0.00000785.

Shafts. Each step is treated as a plain cylinder and the steps are summed: Σ (OD² × Length) × 0.0000062. Steps left blank count as zero, so a plain shaft only needs OD 1 and Length 1. Fillets, undercuts and centre bores are not modelled — for a bored shaft, work the bore out separately as a ring and subtract it.

Weight loss allowance. Adds a percentage on top of the calculated geometry to cover burn-off, scale and cropping during forging. Leave it blank for the finished-part weight; enter your usual allowance for the billet weight to order.

Accuracy. This is an estimating tool for enquiry and ordering. It gives the weight of the ideal geometry entered, not of a specific drawing with all its features. For a firm figure, send us the drawing.
